The History of Army Dentistry
U.S. Army Dentistry
More than 150 years of caring for the dental needs of Soldiers.
In the field… In garrison… In war and in peace…
Supporting Soldier readiness and advancing the practice of dentistry.
Army Dentistry has a rich history that parallels the overall development and professionalism of the Army Medical Department and the United States Army. Despite the rapid growth of the dental profession, it initially took time for the Army to recognize the need for a permanent Dental Corps. Even before the formation of the Army Dental Corps in 1911, there was recognition that dental services were an essential component in maintaining the health and strength of the fighting force.
Today, the connection between oral health and military readiness is firmly established. The proud history of Army Dentistry celebrates the contributions of the Army Dental Care Team of Active Duty and Reserve Component Officers, NCOs, Enlisted Personnel and Department of the Army Civilians in support of the overall mission of the Army Medical Department and the United States Army.
There are many publications and videos detailing the contributions of Army Dentistry. Check out the timeline (see link below) and the Army Dentistry History Resources page.
